This project concentrated on constructing a mobile first app and then a responsive website for educators to provide resources and best practices to each other to create a supportive virtual environment across the Americas (North and South).
The product:
Best Teacher is a Phoenix, AZ based organization focused improving pedagogy and communication among teachers. The organization wants to develop a tool that helps teachers find resources and communicate with other teachers. Best Teacher’s target users include first year teachers, experienced teachers, and master teachers so that mentorship and support can be gained at every phase of being a teacher.
The problem:
Teachers at every level have expressed a need for support and resources from their peers as shown in a survey done at annual teacher convention held at the organization’s headquarters in Phoenix, AZ. This is an issue that can be solved within the teacher community if there is an easy-to-use networking app to help teachers help each other. Research has shown that many teachers have advice and resources but are not able to connect with other teachers in different locations on a regular basis. The problem space is teachers reaching out to other teachers to create a stronger and more successful teaching experience.
The goal:
Design an app that will improve the ease of teacher communication with other teachers to provide resources and support across North America and South America.
Role: UX designer leading the app and responsive website design from conception to delivery
Timeline: April 2022 to July 2022
Responsibilities: Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, iterating on designs, determining information architecture, and responsive design.
I used Best Teacher’s data from the survey that was conducted at their most recent annual conference. Interview questions were developed, and user interviews were conducted.
Many participants recollected on their apprehension as first year teachers and that they needed more support and more resources.
Experienced teachers also provided similar input concerning times when new curriculum initiatives and standards were mandated. They stated that they would benefit from having such an app that they can access at anytime, anywhere.
The feedback received through research was apparent that individuals would benefit from an app that connects them with other teachers. It was very clear that users would be open and willing to work towards improving their teaching experience and supporting other teachers if they had access to an easy-to-use network of other teachers.

Impact
Users shared that the app provided an easy to use and convenient way to connect with other teachers and share information regardless of subject or grade level taught.
One quote was “I feel like I have so much support now. I can talk with teachers that are in my city, in my state and beyond that have tackled the same issues that I am tackling now. It is great!”
What I learned
I learned that teachers are very responsive to having a platform where they can reach out to each other. The mentor/mentee relationship was present through the research. I learned that the problem I was trying to solve involved being able to upload, view, and download in a number of different file types. Also, indexing chat responses was another aspect that was very important. I went through each step of the design process and aligned the app with specific user needs. This process helped me come up with solutions that were useful and easy to access by the user.
Next Steps
Conduct research on how successful the app is in eliminating the problem space between teachers being able to connect with one another.
Add more generic third-party educational resources provided by the organization to create a knowledge base that can be accessed at any time via the mobile app.
Provide more options for users to personalize their profile and see their connections with other teachers.
